Our Sustainability Commitments

We’re innovators, experimenters, and manufacturers - all while respecting our obligations to our people and to the planet

Douglas laboratory

For over 55 years we’ve had great success, but we know to continue growing and thriving in the future, we need to focus on building a sustainable business that is profitable, cares for the planet, and improves people’s lives.

We take our responsibility seriously and work continuously to improve our sustainability performance to achieve the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) needs.

Environmental

We are committed to improving our sustainability performance and protecting the environment.

We invest a huge amount of effort and resources into recycling, reducing waste, and disposing of any by-products of manufacturing in an environmentally safe manner.

Our goal is to reduce our carbon emissions by 5% per annum. Since we made this commitment in 2020, we have achieved significant improvements by switching to hybrid vehicles and reducing the number of air freights required for shipping our raw materials and finished products.

Social

We believe we’ll achieve our mission, together, when we’re all at our best! We take our responsibility as a great employer seriously. It’s important to us that our people are paid fairly, have a safe working environment, good working conditions, and that they’re empowered to do their life’s best work.

Giving back to the community is an integral part of our culture. We are in the privileged position to be able to financially assist a number of deserving organisations through the Douglas Charitable Trust.

Governance

Douglas is a business founded on quality, integrity, product safety, and excellence. We are committed to conducting ourselves and business in an ethical and lawful manner. From the Board down, we focus on our legal obligations and on being a good corporate citizen.

We live by the principles of Good Manufacturing Practice which drives quality across everything we do. This means everything we make is documented, tested, checked, audited, and independently verified before it gets to the consumer. And we can trace every step and person involved in the manufacture of every single product.

We fully support the principles in the United Nations’ Declaration on Human Rights and the International Labour Organisation Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, including non-discrimination, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and freedom from forced and child labour. We seek to uphold human rights in all business activities.

We engage with our employees, suppliers, customers, and government to understand, meet, or go beyond their ESG expectations.

Certifications and commitments

Toitū Carbon Reduce Certification

Toitū is a leading New Zealand-based certification agency that measures emissions in line with ISO 14064-1: 2018 standards and Toitū requirements. The Toitū certification involves a rigorous evaluation process, which includes an in-depth assessment by an independent auditor of a company’s operations and environmental practices.

We’re proud to have achieved Carbon Reduce certification twice and been recognised for our outstanding achievements as finalists in the 2022 Toitū Brighter Future Awards in the Climate Action (biggest reduction) Large Organisation category.

Douglas has proudly maintained Toitū Carbon Reduce certification for five consecutive years, with our 2025 recertification verified in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018 and ISO 14064-3:2019 standards.
